Video Analysis

December 18, 2019.

Hello good readers! It has been a long time since the last time I visited here. I’m so happy because I can write something that I think it will be good for you all and me especially.

This time, I would like to write the analysis about a video that I already chose before. Then I would like to analyze the sociolinguistics’ aspects that's in the video.  Actually, this video analysis is to fulfill Sociolinguistics’ task that thought and given by Mrs. Yuna Tresna Wahyuna, SS., M.Hum. However, i enjoyed watching and analyzed the video even though I felt the difficulties when analyzed it, but I enjoyed it.

The video is about Niki Zefanya, one of singers from Indonesia who become an artist in U.S and she already became an international singer that was done an interview with Billboard Indonesia.

Talking about why I chose the video of Niki Zefanya, because I’m so interested with her, like the way she speaks, the way she sings and the other one is because she’s an Indonesian. That’s why I chose her video for my task.

Before I start to analyze the video, I would like to give little information about who she is and what Billboard Indonesia is.

Niki Zefanya
Niki Zefanya, her full name is Nicole Zefanya. She was born 24 January 1999, she was raised in JakartaIndonesia. She grew up listening to the 1990s R&B such as Destiny's Child and Aaliyah because of her mother. She gained her popularity with her covers and original songs on YouTube, gaining more than 40,000 subscribers. Now, she is an Indonesian singer, songwriter, and record producer under 88rising Entertainment.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niki_(singer)

Billboard Indonesia
Billboard Indonesia Top 100 is a music charts for songs in Indonesia. This chart was composed by Billboard Indonesia, Nielsen Holdings and the Indonesian Recording Industry Association. Billboard Indonesia retrieves data for this charts from the music streaming platform, video streaming platform, radio and karaoke. Only songs with Indonesian lyrics or a mixture of Indonesian and foreign or regional languages can enter the Billboard Indonesia Top 100. This chart is published every Wednesday on the official Billboard Indonesia website and social media. https://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Indonesia_Top_100

Then, now I start to give some information about the detail of video.

Details of video:

Title     : NIKI Ingin Kolaborasi dengan Nadin dan Tulus - #MusicTalks
Date published: July 4, 2019
YouTube channel: Billboard Indonesia
Link of the video:
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7gKWdVUWOA

Let’s get to analyze the video based on characteristics that belong to the sociolinguistics course.
I have watched her video on YouTube and I found some of aspects that belong to the sociolinguistics course. However, I did not  know exactly who was asking questions during the interview, is that a woman or a man. So I just focus on Niki Zefanya.
The aspects that belong to the sociolinguistics course based on the video are:

1.  Language choice in multilingual communities, especially code-mixing.

Why code-mixing, because she was unconscious mix her languages when answered questions from the interviewer. The description in the YouTube channel explained that Niki would be interviewed and answered questions using Bahasa. However, she was unconscious using English during the interview section.

2.  She is bilingual.

Absolutely, because she is an Indonesian but becomes a singer in U.S, of course she can speaks two languages. I do not know how languages that she can speaks. As long as I know from the video, she can speaks two languages, Bahasa and English. So, that’s why I wrote that she is bilingual.

3.  Language shift especially in Demographic factors.

In the video, Niki often mixed her language from Bahasa to English. I thought the reason why she often mixed her language because she usually use English to communicate in U.S. That is why when she was asked to answered questions with Bahasa like the description of the YouTube channel, but she still use English and mixed both languages. So the demographic factors very affect her language when she speaks.

4.  Gender and Age (Explanations of Woman’s Linguistics Behavior)

Based on the video, I could see that Niki was so good when answered every questions that was given by the interviewer. Besides, she is truly good at answering questions, it is also the thing that is in the explanation of woman’s linguistic behavior. In sociolinguistics, women are usually answering every questions very good. They have a lot of interesting words and they can speak it very good. That's why in the video, Niki was very good, though she was very good answering every questions during an intervuew section.

That is all about my analysis of Niki Zefanya’s interview video based on the aspects in sociolinguistic. I hope that information will be useful for you! I will be back!

Thank you very much for reading this!

What is Sociolinguistic?

Hello good readers!!
I'm back like I wrote before!! 😁

Let's to the point!
Now, I'd like to give you the definition of sociolinguistic based on many sources that I've read before. So, I make the conclusion about the definition of sociolinguistic.
Here is it!!!

Yeayyy! The picture above shows the definition of sociolinguistic! Hope it will be useful for you guyss!!!

Thank you everyone πŸ˜† I'll be back soon πŸ˜„

Other Social Factors Affecting Code Choice

Hello good readers!!!
It has been long time since my last post in here!!😁
How have you been? I hope you'll be fine!!

Now, I'd like to inform you about the material that still relate with sociolinguistic!

Here is it!!
As you can see at the picture above, I'd like to inform you about other social factors affecting code choice.
There are four other social factors that affecting code choice.

  1. The Social Distance
  2. The Status Relationship
  3. The Dimension of Formality
  4. The Function or Goal of the Interaction

The social distance means how far your relation with your partner speaking. How well do you know each other, strangers or friends. It will be different when you are talking with your friend and with strangers, right?
The status relationship means the relative status or role between two speaker. For example one of the speaker is student and the other is teacher. It will be different how they are talking each other, right?
The dimension of formality is about the situation that the speakers speak. For example in formal wedding ceremony, the speakers will be speak formal than in the lunchtime chat.
The function or goal of the interaction means what is the language being used for? For example getting a bargain.

I think enough for this material. I'll be back soon!! Thank you very much πŸ˜„

The Findings and Discussion of Journal

THE FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION of THE IMPROVEMENT OF STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH ERROR ANALYSIS METHOD

Hello, readers! So grateful we can meet again in this new post. Now, I would like to review the continuance of the previous post that I’ve posted before. This post explain about the findings, discussion and conclusion of the journal entitled above. Hope you will get new meaningful knowledge everybody 😁

1. The Findings

This research is conducted for two cycles. The data of the research are presented by cycle consisting of three types namely (1) pre-test of students’ writing achievement, (2) post-test of students’ writing achievement in cycle I, and (3) post-test of students’ writing achievement in cycle II or the end of the research. Then, this research also presents the students’ perception regarding to teaching and learning writing through EAM. In terms of types data, this research consists of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data are the students’ achievement in writing. Then, the qualitative data are the students’ perception toward EAM.

2. Discussion

Based on the description of the data above, after cycle I ends, the students’ average writing scores are improving significantly  from pre-test (59.42) to be (67.58) at the end of cycle I. It means that there is an improvement of student score about (8.16) point at the end of cycle I. In cycle II or at the end of the research, the students’ average in writing achievement increases significantly from (67.58) in cycle I to be (76.74). It means that there is a (10.16) basis point of improvement. In addition, this also means that the improvement of students’ writing achievement is bigger than that of the improvement from pre-test to the end of the cycle I (8.16) basis points. Then, the improvement of the students’ average in writing become higher when it is seen from the average of pre-test (59,42) basis point to be (76,74) basis point at cycle II or at the end of the research. The value of the improvement is about (17.32) basis point.

The significant effect of EAM as a teaching and learning method or strategy is actually also reported by Dirgeyasa and Husein (2007: 25). However, their research is concerned with the structure subject. But, principally, the EAM can improve the students’ learning achievement significantly.

So it is clearly stated that that the EAM really is effective to improve the students’ writing achievement. This happens because the EAM has three strengths and advantages for teaching and learning such as (1) the lecturer really know how far the learning objectives have been achieved, (2) the error analysis provides data, fact, and evidences s how the students learn and what strategies they use for, and (3) the error and mistakes made by the students can be used as learning resources or materials for further studies so that they will know what wrongs are or what corrects are (Brown,1980; Corder 1981; Chafe,W.L,1982).
In term of the  perception regarding the use of the EAM, the data show that the students’ perception  towards the EAM as a teaching and learning method for teaching writing is classified into two 6 (six) items namely (1) relevant, (2) systematic, (3) practical, (4) critical and analytical, (5) motivating, and (6) interesting. The results show that students have different perceptions regarding to the EAM for teaching and learning writing as shown by table 5 below.

3. Conclusion

Based on the results of research and discussion, by implementing the EAM systematically and consistently, it can help the students to improve their writing achievement significantly. It increases to be (76.74) in average or it improves (17.32) basis points from the pre-test (59.42). Besides that, it also provides the students’ to have positive and good perceptions toward the EAM for teaching and learning writing skill of English. Also, the EAM can lead the students to think critically and analytically about the subject they learn.

I think it is enough for this post. I’m sorry because a lot of mistakes that I’ve made in this post.
“Nothing is perfect”~

The similarities and differences between two journals

Hello everybody, I’m glad to see you again. Now I would like to give you some information about the differences between my previous review journal and the new review journal. Actually, I have so many tasks that should be finished in this week, but I still want to share to you some little information about that journal. I hope the information will be useful for you guys. So enjoy it……😁

The journal that I want to review are USERS’ PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF FACEBOOK AS A MEDIUM OF LEARNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO WRITING SKILLS and THE IMPROVEMENT OF STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH ERROR ANALYSIS METHOD.

The similarities between them is they are both explained how the way to improve students’ writing skills. They also have similarities opinion that said learning language in the classroom is not enough to improve students’ writing skills. Both of them thought that learning in the classroom are monotonous and are making bored for students. Both of them thought to find another method or way to make students’ writing skills improving because students’ writing skills is very important for students.

The differences between the two journals are the method that used to identify the problem in improving students’ writing skills. The previous journal explained that using a Facebook can help students’ improving their writing skills because so many students in this era use social media. Facebook is one of the social media that often used by students to express their feelings, opinions, or other things. So the previous journal said that using Facebook can help students to improve their writing skills but still with control by their teacher. Meanwhile, the new journal said that error analysis method can help students improving their writing skills. By implementing the EAM systematically and consistently, it can help the students to improve their writing achievement significantly. In addition, the lecturers also should allocate enough time during the process of teaching and learning because the EAM provides relatively long and complex steps and procedure to implement.

Now, I would like to review the new journal that I’ve found in www.eajournal.org . As I have mentioned before the new journal entitled THE IMPROVEMENT OF STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH ERROR ANALYSIS METHOD.

Parts of journal are:
  1. Title: THE IMPROVEMENT OF STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH ERROR ANALYSIS METHOD
  2. Personal author: Wy Dirgeyasa
  3. Abstract
  4. Keywords
  5. Introduction
  6. Literary review
  7. Research methodology
  8. The findings and discussion
  9. Conclusion
  10. References

For this moment, I would like to review introduction, literary review and research methodology. First, in the introduction, the writer wrote about how very important writing skill is. Beside of four language skills, the writing skill is the one of skills that very important to have by every students. In this part, writer also wrote that the method that usually uses in the classroom often monotonous and bored for students.  The writer has shown that the error analysis method is assumed to be relevant for teaching and learning writing. Because of regarding to EAM, (Nunan (1995; Harmer, 2009) argues that it is a typical teaching and learning process emphasizing the bottom-up approach in which the students’ involvement and participation  are essential during the teaching and learning process. Second, literary review, in this part, the writer explained about the explanation about Error and Error Analysis Method (EAM). Generally, the writer wrote definition of error in language learning may be relatively different among the linguists. Error in language learning occurs because the learner is not able to use language properly and correctly. Furthermore,  Error analysis (EA) or Error analysis Method  (EAM) is an alternative to contrastive analysis, an approach influenced by behaviorism through which applied linguists search to use the formal distinctions between the learners' first and second languages to predict errors.  Third, research methodology. The methodology that is used by writer is the classroom action research. Test is used as a technique to collect data from students. Then, instrument for collecting data is essay writing test. The writing is assessed by using assessment rubric. Then, the data are analyzed by descriptive analysis.

I think it is enough for now. I hope this will be useful for you. I’ll be back soon.
To be continued.

Teaching Vocabulary Using Film and Video

Hello again good readers! How have you been? I hope all of you always happy and healthy πŸ˜„. Now, I'm back for my new post in my blog after I've finished my Midterm Test. I hope you will enjoy it πŸ˜„.

Now, I'd like to give my opinion about International Journal of English Language Teaching that published by European Centre for Research Training and Development UK ( www.eajournals.org ). This journal entitled TEACHING VOCABULARY USING FILM AND VIDEO: THE DEVELOPMENT OF
SENIOR SECONDARY STUDENTS’ REGISTERS by Oluwayomi S. Oladunjoye (PhD). This International Journal really helps me to know and to understand about journal that explained about English Language teaching. This journal also has many volume that you can search it and you can find it to gain your knowledge.

Firstly, I'd like to mention the components of the journal.
1. The title TEACHING VOCABULARY USING FILM AND VIDEO: THE DEVELOPMENT OF SENIOR SECONDARY STUDENTS’ REGISTERS
2. Name of Ownership - Oluwayomi S. Oladunjoye (Ph.D).
3. Abstract
4. Keywords
5. Introduction
6. Statement of the Problem
7. Brief Literature Review
8. Research Question
9. Methodology
10. Instrumentation
11. Procedures
12. Data Analysis
13. Results
14. Discussion
15. Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation
16. References

Secondly, I'd like to give my opinion about the introduction of this journal. In this part, the journal has explained that vocabularies is one of the importants points in English aspects, beside writing, listening, speaking and reading. The four of English skills cannot be reached if someone or people cannot master the vocabularies. The vocabularies help people to master the fourth English skills. According to this journal, Stakeholders in educational sector frequently complain on the low quality of education in Nigeria educational system.

"Stakeholders in educational sector frequently complain on the low quality of
education in Nigeria educational system and the resultant effect of poor academic performance among senior secondary school students in English language. Some blame the students for this apparent decline in quality of education and moral values; others blame the teachers for the woes in our schools, while the teachers shifted the blame on the children and parental attitudes to their children education (Arony & Ogbadu, 2010)."

Based on that quotation, student have declined in quality of education and moral values.

Flexibility is now required more than ever,
in the classrooms to attend to handling the heterogeneous nature of language learners; to capture their proficiency levels and address their interests and learning strategies. This becomes easy to achieve through appropriate application of film and video. Film and Video are multimedia forms that convey information through two simultaneous sensory channels: aural (audio) and visual. The learners more enjoy learning English by using film and video. From film and video, the learners can easily to learn vocabularies and easily to learn English language in a congtext but still enjoyable for them.

Third, the review of journal will be continued. I hope you'll get the advantages from these. See you~
Thank you~  🌱

Part of Conclusion and Recommendation on the Journal

Hello good persons! In this beautiful occasion I wanna continue reviewing International Journal of English Teaching that entitled "USERS' PERCEPTION IN THE USE OF FACEBOOK AS A MEDIUM OF LEARNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO WRITING SKILLS." Published by European Centre for Research Training and Development UK (www.eajournals.org). There are two part of this, Conclusion and Recommendation.

Now, I'd like to review about the conclusion that include in that journal. The conclusion explain that the exposure of senior secondary students to social media is high such that this has negative effects on their writing skills and general linguistic performance as written in the conclusion of journal. The conclusion also explain that using a social media, in this discussion Facebook, can't help student to improve their writing skills. In addition, using social media makes student's writing skills be worst because when they write something about their feeling or they thoughts, they are usually using wrong grammatical rules. They usually write some words with wrong. So, the social media can't help students to improve their English writing skills.

Furthermore, in this part, writer also include the recommendation that given by the researcher. There are 4 point of recommendation of the researcher.
  1. Students should decrease their exposure to Facebook and pay more their attention to their writing skills.
  2. The examination bodies such as WAEC and NECO should motivate the use of standard English in examination situation.
  3. It is important to recommend that social media should be used more carefully by students when needed and not at all leisure time.
  4. Students should be encouraged to write more essays to enable teachers discover and correct their errors.

So, we can conclude that social media can't help students to improve their writing skills and the best way to improve writing skills are learning with the best guided of writing and pay attention about grammatical rules in the writing.

I think that's enough, I do apologize for all of the mistakes that I've written. Thank you~
I'll be back soon. 🌸

Continuance review part of Discussion of Findings from International Journal of English Teaching

Hello good persons! In this beautiful occasion I wanna continue reviewing International Journal of English Teaching (www.eajournals.org) that entitled "USERS' PERCEPTION IN THE USE OF FACEBOOK AS A MEDIUM OF LEARNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO WRITING SKILLS".

Now, I'd like to review about part of Discussion of Findings. In this part, the writer gave the analysis of data collection and discussion of major findings. This part, the writer collected data from 3 aspects. Two aspects came from Co-relational Analysis of the use of the Internet (Facebook) and usage of Social Speak In Students' writing and one aspect came from Analysis of Social Speak's linguistic features in Facebook messaging and in students' sheets.

In the first aspect of Co-relational Analysis of the use of the Internet (Facebook) and usage of Social Speak In Students' writing, the writer has collected data about frequency of social media usage of students who use facebook (30 males and 30 females). The result showed that 63.3% they used facebook at many times a day, 23.3% used it daily, 10% others and 3.3% not used it. So we can conclude that students majority used Facebook often in a days.

In the second aspect of Co-relation between Frequency of Facebook Messaging and Use of Social Speak in Essay, the writer has shown data about frequency of social media usage. The result of the data showed that about 66.4% of students used social media many times a day of frequency of social speak in students' writing. 27% daily, 6.6% others, and 0% not used. So, findings of the study therefore suggest that students' constant use of Facebook with social speak as their communicative habit seriously hampers students' writing skills.

In the last aspect of Analysis of Social Speak's linguistic features in Facebook messaging and in students' sheets. This part has shown data of patterns of occurrence of features of social speak in students' formal writing. Based on the data, the three most dominant features of social speak as observed in this study include: contractions, alphanumeric homophony, and misused punctuation. Contraction represents that 28.7% in social media messages and 37.5% in students' essays. Alphanumeric homophony represents 24.6% in social media messages and 30.9% in students' essays. Misused punctuation represents that 21.7% of such features in social media messages and 22.7% in students' essays.
So we can conclude that there are three most dominant features of social speak as observed in this study both in Facebook messages and students' essays.

I think it is enough. I do apology for all of my mistakes that I've done and I've wrote. Nothing is perfect. To be continued. Soon~

Thank you.

Continuance From Review Journal

Hello everyone, Now I'm come back to continue reviewing International Journal of English Language Teaching that published by European Centre for Research Training and Development UK ( www.eajournals.org ). This journal entitled "USERS' PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF FACEBOOK AS A MEDIUM OF LEARNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO WRITING SKILLS".

Now, I wanna review about parts of the journal there are Statement of the Problem, Research Questions, Significance of the Study, Scope of the Study, Theoretical Framework, and Methodology.

First, Statement of the Problem. In this part, the journal explained how social media, especially Facebook has given explosion effects to the younger generation. This part explained that about 65% of the world's population use social media. Hence, this study tries to investigate the influence of Facebook on the writing skills of Secondary School students.

Second, Research Question. This study attempts to answer only one question: "Does Facebook have any influence on students' writing skills?". Because of when we have toke a look statement of the problem that said about 65% of the world's population use social media, especially Facebook that be our investigation.

Third, Significance of the Study. In this part, the writer explained that it is expected that the findings of this study would contribute to knowledge about the effect of social media on the teaching and learning of English language in Nigeria. As I've wrote before, this journal discuss about the effect of using social media for younger generation, so, the significance of this study also talk about the effect of social media on the teaching language, especially in Nigeria. This research could also become a baseline for further studies on social media and universal learning. Also, this study would contribute immensely to improving students' writing skills, and generally---- their proficiency in English language.

Fourth, Scope of the Study. The scope of the study was written by the writer was narrowed down to the influence of Facebook on writing skills of Senior Secondary School students in Alimoso Local Government, Lagos State, Nigeria. The scope of this study just focus about the influence of Facebook on writing skills student because the writer has narrowed it. So, we can get the point easily.

Fifth, Theoretical Framework. This part, the journal quoted from theory by George Gerbner. Cultivation theory by George Gerbner is one of the core theories of media effects. The central focus of this theory is that persistent long term exposure to media content has small but measurable effects on the perception of the audience and the more a person is exposed to a message provided by the media, the more likely that person believes that the message is real. In this study, the effect of Facebook on students' linguistic expressions is being measured with proportion to its usage. So, that is why the writer chooses theory of George Gerbner as a theoretical framework.

Sixth, Methodology. In this part, writer explained about the methodology for this study. A descriptive survey design was adopted in this study to get the natural quantitative information that is required for this research from the represented population. A simple random sampling technique was used and sixty (60) SS2 students (30 males and 30 females) from Federal Government College, Ijanikin, and King's College, Yaba, Lagos who were Facebook users were studied. The main tools used for the collection of data included questionnaire, sampled social media messages generated by students, and essays (in sheets) produced by the students. These sheets were content-analyzed to determine to what extent "social speak" as observed in their Facebook messages also occurred in the students' answer sheets. Thus, the methodology for this study was used A simple random sampling technique that used for collection of data included questionnaire, sampled social media and essays.

Facebook can increase writing skill?

Hello again good readers! How have you been? I hope all of you always happy and healthy πŸ˜„. Now, I'm back for my new post in my blog after almost 2 month. I hope you will enjoy it πŸ˜„.

Now, I'd like to give my opinion about International Journal of English Language Teaching that published by European Centre for Research Training and Development UK ( www.eajournals.org ). This journal entitled "USERS' PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF FACEBOOK AS A MEDIUM OF LEARNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO WRITING SKILLS". This International Journal really helps me to know and to understand about journal that explained about English Language teaching. This journal also has many volume that you can search it and you can find it to gain your knowledge.

Firstly, I'd like to mention the components of the journal.
1. The title "USERS' PERCEPTION ON THE USE OF FACEBOOK AS A MEDIUM OF LEARNING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO WRITING SKILLS".
2. Name of Ownership - Oluwayomi S. Oladunjoye (Ph.D).
3. Abstract.
4. Keywords.
5. Introduction.
6. Statement of the Problem.
7. Research Questions.
8. Significance of the Study.
9. Scope of the Study.
10. Theoritical Framework.
11. Methodology.
12. Discussion of Findings.
13. Conclusion and Recommendatio.
14. References.

Secondly, I'd like to give my opinion about the introduction of this journal. After I read the introduction, apparently, the introduction encompass users' perception of Facebook.
I thought that it's because users' perception can also being recognition about the case of the journal was talking about. In the introduction, writer wrotes many users' perception about the use of Facebook. In the first part of introduction, the writer quoted from SchwΓ€mmlein & Moskaliuk, (2012) that explained about the convenience of using social media as a learning strategies for students. Another users' also gave explanation that learning English via internet is a seamless way to increasing the effectiveness of English learning among students, and so on.
Most of all users' perception assumed that learning English via internet or social media, especially, learning English via Facebook can helps students more confident, more happy, more comfortable while learning English via Facebook. Due to the increasing of technology, students can easily learning English by using Facebook and internet, of course. The students can improve their writing skill and reading skill by using Facebook. Additionally, some of users' perception explained that teacher can create a private group discussion for the students to improving their skills without make them feel ashamed. The students also can be active while learning English via Facebook. In this introduction also explained that most of students feel ashamed when learning English face-to-face in classroom. So, if the students learn English via Facrbook, they can feel more confident to put out their skills and it really helps students to increase their skills, especially, reading and writing skills.

Thirdly, This article will be continued 😁. I think it's enough from me about giving my opinion of the introduction of this journal. I'll be back soon. πŸ˜„πŸ˜‰

Don't forget to give me your comment and critic and I apologize for everything that I've wrote in this article. See you soon, good readers!. πŸ˜„πŸ€—
